A segment on TMZ on TV featuring K-pop girl group EXID is drawing criticism from the scene’s stars, with some calling the video feature racist.
In the clip, one of the site’s reporter’s talks about the “invasion” of K-pop fans at Los Angeles International Airport to meet EXID, who were performing at the 2015 Korea Times Music Festival alongside other popular acts like TVXQ! andApink. The footage shows member Junghwa greeting the TMZ crew and speaking a little English. The reporter then mocks the singer’s English to her co-workers. See below:
When her co-workers start laughing at her, she responds, “What?! If it were a British girl I would do a British accent.”
Furthermore, the segment finds a TMZ employee asking her Asian co-worker where she was born, to which she responds, “America.”
The segment struck a nerve in the K-pop community, with fans and f(x)’sAmber, 2PM’s Taecyeon and Roy Kim sharing their thoughts on the matter via Twitter
Korean media reports that EXID’s record label, Yedang Entertainment, has deemed the clip “racist” and said it was “wrong to make fun of someone’s happiness at seeing fans” in a statement translated by Koreaboo.com. The label’s CEO Jeon Suenghwi added that they weren’t aware that TMZ employees were present and “never thought Junghwa’s pronunciation would be subject to ridicule.” He mentioned both Junghwa and her band mates were “extremely upset.”
Summary: The Korea girl group ‘EXID’ recently went to LA, America for performance. The member of ‘EXID’, Junghwa had an interview with entertainment media TMZ and things happened. There is a ‘TMZon TV’ in TMZ broadcasting that reporters tell about stars or entertainment incidents. Reporters talked about Junghwa’s interview and one female reporter imitate Junghwa’s way of talking. Other reporters also started to laugh and imitate her ridiculously. When this was exposed to people, many Korean felt upset and very angry about reporter’s behaviors. People felt they were insulted and they want an apologize from TMZ media.
Opinion: I noticed this news late so I didn’t know about it exactly. However my friends got really angry and kept talking about it, so I saw the broadcasting via youtube. After seeing that, I didn’t deal with this seriously but I felt it could be an insult, and people could be frustrated. I didn’t feel seriously because I already knew that there are some discrimination to Korean people. However it was also quite shocking to me that media express this openly to people. I think they knew that many Korean could watch this video and feel bad. I don’t think it is a huge mistake that person have a discriminative thought but it is a mistake to expose it in public. This is not a good manner and not a good etiquette to person who came to their nation as a guest. Because of this incident, related news are exposed to us continuously. One great example is the great soccer player, Christian Ronaldo. He interviewed with a little boy and a boy started to ask with unskilled Spanish. Audiences started to laugh about boy’s pronunciation but Ronaldo became serious. In addition, he scolded to audiences and tell people that boy doing a great job. He kept encouraging the boy and Ronaldo got applaud. I think this way of behavior is really cool. If at least one reporter had a thought like this, this happening didn’t happen.

Honestly, the video is extremely disturbing. Personally, I am really sensitive with racist jokes because I lived in a country where people made racist jokes even while walking in the streets. Although some can say that it’s a little harsh, I think what the reporter said in that video is truly ignorant. I wasn’t aware that there was a video! Thanks for sharing.
